Guidance on the states where you can see patients
What states can I see patients in?
The states listed on your Fay profile reflect the states where Fay believes you are permitted to deliver care, based on the licenses you've added, Fay’s review of current regulations, and the location the patient entered at booking.
Important: Always confirm that your patient is physically located in a state where you're able to deliver care on the day of the appointment.
What if my patient is located in a state where I'm not licensed to practice?
If your patient is not physically located in a state listed on your Fay profile at the time of the appointment, follow the guidance below:
Temporarily out of state: ask the patient to reschedule their visit for a time when they are back in a state listed on your Fay profile.
Permanently relocated: if the patient has moved to a state not listed on your Fay profile, refer them to another provider in the Share Referrals space in the Fay Community.
How does Fay match me with patients from different states?
Fay matches you with patients in states where you hold a direct license, as well as patients in non-practice-exclusive states. Non-practice-exclusive states allow you to see patients beyond the states where you hold a direct license. For example, if you hold a license in Georgia, you may also be matched with patients in Wisconsin, as Wisconsin is currently a non-practice-exclusive state.
How does state licensure work for registered dietitians?
State licensure for registered dietitians differs from other healthcare disciplines. Unlike therapists, who must hold a license in a patient's state to provide care (a 1-to-1 licensure structure), not all states require a state-specific license for registered dietitians to practice.
Based on Fay's analysis, the following states can be served with an active CDR credential as a registered dietitian: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin
Note: State licensure requirements are set at the state level and may change over time.
What are exclusionary states?
Exclusionary states, also referred to as practice-exclusive states, are states where nutrition counseling is restricted to providers who hold a license specific to that state.
The following are practice-exclusive states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming
Note: Exclusionary states will not be listed on your Fay profile unless you hold an active license specific to that state. Compact states are not currently included in Fay's licensure analysis.
Updating your state licensure
How do I update my information if I obtain a new license?
Anytime you receive a new license, please submit this form so we can keep your licensure information current. Keeping licensure details up to date is your responsibility and impacts the states shown on your Fay Profile where you are able to serve patients.
How do I remove an expired license?
If your license has expired and you do not plan to renew it, you must stop seeing any patients located in that state immediately. To support continuity of care, you can transition those patients to another provider using Share Referrals in the Community. To remove the state from your Fay profile, complete the licensure management task in your To-Dos and confirm that you will not be renewing your license. Once confirmed, the inactive state will be removed from your profile.
How do I add a renewed license?
To add a renewed license, complete the licensure management task in your To-Dos. This allows us to verify that your license has been renewed. If your license is not renewed before it expires, you won’t be able to continue seeing patients in that state. In that case, you should pause care until your license has been successfully renewed and verified.
What if I want to serve patients in more states?
To serve patients in additional states, you can apply for state-specific licensure. Based on our current analysis, we’re able to match you with patients on Fay only in the states listed in our courtesy guidance on your Fay profile.
Note: Fay has no control over state licensure approval processes or timelines.
Do you have resources to help me understand state licensure requirements?
Yes, a state licensure guide is available as a reference when applying for state licensure in additional states.
What if I disagree with Fay’s analysis and want to remove a state from my profile?
If the states shown on your Fay profile don’t reflect where you believe you are able to practice, you can submit this request for review form. Fay's team will review the information provided and process your request accordingly. You have full autonomy over how you manage your private practice. If a patient falls outside of your comfort area, you are always welcome to refer them to another provider through the Share Referrals space in the Fay Community, or you can turn off Fay referrals.
